National Second Place - Cultural Events and Traditions - Christmas Theme "T'was the Night Before Christmas". (2005-2006)

A great way to spend a morning or afternoon, this handsome historic home, built in 1860, tells in superb architectural detail of fashionable life during Mobile's affluent ante-bellum days. The House is famous for the iron lace that lavishly decorates the front facade. The Ideal Cement Company purchased the Richards House from descendants of Captain and Caroline Richards in 1946. They restored it for use as their downtown offices, then in 1973 presented the property to the city of Mobile.

The city has leased the house to the six Mobile chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution for furnishing and administering it as a Period House-Museum.  All of the furnishings in the home are "of the period" which means that they are prior to 1870. The Richards-DAR House Museum is in the heart of the deTonti Square Historic District and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Richards DAR House is also home to a fine genealogical library compiled and maintained by the Governing Board of the House. It is open for research and copying of documents on the premises. Call the House for further details.
